From Studio to Stage: The Christian Artist’s Guide to Live Performance
Making the jump from the studio to the stage can feel a little daunting, but it's also a deeply rewarding experience. Sharing your music live is a powerful way to connect with listeners and receive real-time feedback that can be incredibly encouraging. But for artists of faith, a unique tension exists: how do you approach a performance in a way that is both professional and worshipful?
This month's artist tip is all about navigating that space and finding the right opportunities to perform.
Finding Your Audience.
The first step is to clarify who your music is for. Is it primarily for the church, or for a wider audience outside of it? Within those categories, is it congregational music, or geared toward children or adults?
Answering these questions can help you find the right performance opportunities. If your music is for churchgoers, consider applying for slots at Christian festivals or conferences. If you're looking to reach a broader audience, look for gigs at local coffee shops, restaurants, or platforms like Sofar Sounds.
Just Start.
Many of your initial performances might be pro-bono, but that's okay. Think of it as an investment in your craft and your community. The more you get out there and perform, the more comfortable you'll become, and over time, these opportunities can turn into a source of income.
Performing live is a vulnerable act, but it's also where true connection happens. By intentionally choosing your audience and leaning into the process, you can create a powerful experience for both yourself and your listeners.
